Innovations Here, There, Everywhere!

This week I’m going to be focused on comparing and contrasting the most innovative states and countries from around the world. There are innovations and advancements that are happening locally as far as globally, and it’s interesting to see who is the most innovative and who might be struggling. Being innovative is something that we all strive for, it means you’re creative and easily come up with new ideas. You can be innovative in many different ways. Technology is something that is widespread everywhere, so it’s always being innovated and there is a lot that we can compare.

Innovations Ranked Locally

Close to home, NH is a state that is fairly innovative with technology. Jeff Feingold from NH Business Review, states that “New Hampshire has moved up two spots to No. 7 in the Milken Institute’s ranking of state “innovation pipelines.”” Wikipedia says that the Milken Institute is a group that posts research and data related to market ideas and financial innovations in the US and globally. Every year they rank states in the US from most innovative to least innovative (number one being the most innovative.)

Overall, NH moved up to number seven this past year.
The Milken Institute breaks the rankings into sub-indexes, and NH did terrifically well in the technology portion. “Another category where New Hampshire performed well was in the technology and science workforce metric, which measures intensity of computer and information science experts, engineers, and life and physical scientists in the overall workforce. The state was tied for No. 6, with Minnesota and Virginia. In 2018, it ranked 11th in the category." (Feingold) NH proves to be a technologically innovative state overall, and it’s well up in the top 10! According to the chart on statetechandscience.org, this past year, Maryland was the most technologically innovative state in the US. Ranked in third was Massachusetts, which is also very impressive and close to home. Florida, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Nevada were states that were very unsuccessful and ranked at the very bottom of the technology category.

Innovations Ranked Globally

On a larger scale, the United States makes the cut for the top ten most innovative countries in the world. Cristoph Damm published an article in Business Insider that said the top three are Germany, South Korea, and Singapore. According to Sintia Radu from US News, the countries that are topping the charts with technology innovations are; Japan, China, and South Korea, with the United States well up in fourth. Typically if a country invents a good product or new technology they sell and share their product worldwide. For example, both Samsung and Hyundai are companies that were invented in South Korea, and today they’re both used in the United States and other countries. "The scale of these large companies - such as Samsung and Hyundai - not only enabled a massive pooling of resources but also resulted in Korean manufacturing moving into a new phase of growth driven by technological leadership and innovation" (Why Innovation is...) New innovations and ideas are always being spread around the world. In a way, everyone is working together but there's friendly competition which helps inspire a better product!

Overall, technology innovations are constantly being thought of and created everywhere. A huge takeaway I got from learning about local as well as global innovations is that NH is more innovative than I thought. Considering NH is rated sixth in the US, and the US is fourth in the world proves that we are very technologically innovative. This was shocking to me because I didn’t realize it was happening so close to home!

Technology in a Global Pandemic

Over the course of the past year, technology has become vital to our society. Due to the global pandemic, physically communicating with peers has been tough. One major way that people are able to keep their special bonds is through social media and technology. There are apps and programs on our phones and computers that allow us to stay connected with our friends and family. In most cases, we can hear them speak, and sometimes even see them! Facetime, Zoom, Snapchat, Instagram, and basic call and text are some technology programs that have been very useful in these tough times. Technology was used for basic communication even before the pandemic. Now, it has evolved to a whole new level. Today, technology has many other functions including, remote learning, online shopping, contactless payments, telehealth, and more.  Education      Education is fully remote in most places. Many schools have switched over and adapted to ...

Futuristic Technology

Recently, I read the blog post A Cloudy Crystal Ball, which focused on the future of technology. The main idea of the post was to share how in the past it has been difficult to predict the future, and the source provided key examples of this. This was very interesting to me because I don't commonly think deeply about the future. My interest grew stronger, and I began doing some research on some of the possible future technology products.      Technology plays a huge role in our everyday lives. As you know, technology is always advancing, and people are inventing something new every day. It’s crazy to learn about the technology that is predicted to be released in the near future. After doing research, I’ve gathered some data on a couple products that could possibly be released by 2030! It varies from brain implants allowing people to read each other's minds, to robotic guide dogs. Aguavida      One of the products that really c...
